Distributed Energy

EMD has over 20 years of experience within both preparation of detailed feasibility analyses, study appraisals and second opinion analyses for many different types of distributed energy projects. We have no affiliations with manufacturers or developers, and are therefore in a position to give an unbiassed appraisal of the viability of cogeneration, trigeneration, renewable and other energy projects at a particular site.

We are using sophisticated computer software to make models of both existing and proposed energy plants. The models enable accurate plant sizes to be determined and various plant options and running schemes to be investigated. In turn this allows accurate financial modelling to be undertaken to determine key financial indicators such as NPV, IRR and payback period, giving our clients the most cost-effective solution.

By using computer software to analyse the feasibility of energy plants, we are able to simulate and optimise the production by each energy unit at the plant on a minute-by-minute basis throughout each year investigated.

We are able to make economic feasibility analyses for CHP plants operating on both fixed tariff structures as well as plants operating on fluctuating pool prices.

As part of our studies, we are able to analyse and optimise the use of thermal storages (heat and cooling) in the operation of an energy plant. We often see that the overall economic feasibility of the energy plant improves considerably when a thermal storage is being included in the project as it becomes possible to increase the electrical production in the best-paid hours. The accumulated thermal energy can then subsequently be utilized when the plant is not producing electricity, e.g. at nights or weekends, when the electricity price is typically low. EMD cooperates with numerous partners, Danish as well as international. Often the cooperation takes place in the framework of EU-projects.
