Participation in research and capacity building projects
The Energy Systems Department typically participate in public funded research and capacity building projects, when its energy system modeling tool energyPRO is to be used very advanced or is to be further developed in these projects.
Ongoing projects
Market optimization of all CHP-plants in a selected municipality (Elmarkedsoptimering af Ringkøbing-Skjern Kommunes kraftvarmeværker)
The project analyses how a number of district heating plants with cogeneration and electric consumption can be optimized when participating in actual electricity markets. The case is the Danish rural municipality “Ringkøbing-Skjern”.
Establishing a network for delivering balancing power (Etablering af nordjysk netværk for elregulering)
The project aims to analyze and demonstrate how distributed cogeneration plants – also including heat pumps - can contribute to improved flexibility for the energy system and contribute to improved earnings for the distributed cogeneration plants.
RegModHarz (Regenerative model region of Harz)
EMD International A/S is subcontractor in the RegModHarz-project. In this project the operation of the renewable energy sources in the Harz region is optimized. The Harz model region boasts extensive sources of renewable energy, ranging from wind farms and solar power systems to hydroelectric power stations. Read more about the project here.
Proactive participation of wind in the electricity markets.
This project demonstrate that wind turbines themselves may deliver an important part of the balancing tasks needed, thus reducing high unbalance prices and promoting the development of wind energy in Europe
stoRE
The EU project stoRE aims to facilitate the realization of the ambitious objectives for renewable energy by unblocking the potential for energy storage infrastructure. Energy storage, as part of an integrated approach including grid reinforcement and demand management helps accommodate higher percentages of intermittent renewable energy by balancing the supply and demand and improving the power quality. Completed projects
Activation of incineration CHP-plants in the regulating power market (Aktivering af 200 MW affaldskraftvarme opreguleringseffekt)
2009-2011.The project analyses the options for waste incinerating cogeneration plants to participate in the Danish regulating power markets. The final project report can be found here.
MASSIG - Market Access for Smaller Size Intelligent Electricity Generation
2008-2010. In the EU-project MASSIG the challenge is to show that even small plants gets more independent from subsidies or grants when they through aggregation participate in the “big energy markets”.Find the project homepage here.
DESIRE - Dissemination strategy on Electricity balancing for large-Scale Integration of Renewable Energy
2005-2007. The DESIRE project developed methods and disseminated practices for the integration of renewable electricity. Combined Heat and Power (CHP) can work together with wind power to produce a balanced and more predictable supply of electricity. Find the project homepage here.
MOSAIK
2001-2004. The projects analyses technical issues concerning integration of large amounts of fluctuating wind power productions in the energy system. The project is integrating detailed electro technical analyses, energy system analyses and transmission grid analyses. The final project report can be found here.
Local energy markets (Lokale energimarkeder)
2001-2003. In this project is evaluated the socio economic benefit of improving the flexibility of the Danish energy system. Main results are that there are net benefits of regional integration of fluctuating RES compared to expanding foreign electricity trade with neighboring countries, and that Denmark in the future will be well prepared to utilize still more amounts of Wind and other RES. The final project report can be found here.
