Project and site
Figure 2: Map of Denmark with the position of Middelgrunden offshore wind farm marked with a blue star.
Middelgrunden offshore wind farm consists of 20 Bonus 2MW windturbines with a hub height of 64 m. It is located outside Copenhagen harbour in Denmark. The windturbines are forming a curve on a shallow bank called Middelgrunden that for years has been used as deposition ground for all sorts of litter from construction sites etc. The distance to land is approx. 3 km. The wind farm is visible from a large part of the city of Copenhagen, including the inner city.
Half of the turbines are owned by a co-op called "Middelgrundens Vindmøllelaug", the other half is owned by the local utility company "Københavns Energi".
HistoryThe Middelgrunden offshore wind farm has been in the planning process since 1996 where the first proposal was submitted. Through its innovative character governmental support was granted to make the necessary studies for a project. This work was led by Copenhagen Environment- and Energy Office, the same office that was also behind the Lynetten Wind farm ( see Project example - October).
It took a lengthy procedure which the included every group of interest that could be affected by the windfarm. With this location it meant quite a lot of people. One of the main topics was the layout and the visual impression of the windfarm and this was changed significantly through the process. The final result is one that received much appraisal and is deemed satisfying by most of the implicated parties.
