Pit thermal energy storage

Pit thermal energy storage (PTES) combined with solar collector systems and other technologies such as e.g. CHP, ORC, boilers and heat pumps is an attractive solution to utilize long-term stored excess heat and consequently to de-carbonize the heat supply.

It can be build big. It is cheap. It is simple.

But it is not simple to calculate!

At EMD we have the knowledge and the tools to calculate the economics of operating PTES. We model and simulate the different temperature levels in the PTES and use time values for solar radiation, spot market prices and heat demand to find the optimal system with the lowest operational cost.
